Ultimate Tool for Playing Your Media.

May 21st, 2009 hunter 2 comments

rescueIn my last post I gave a list of free software that I find extremely useful, on that list was a program called VLC. VLC stands for Video Lan Client and it is by far the best media player I have ever used. Why do I like it so much? Well, free is a great place to start, VLC is open source and has a very active development community bringing out new features on a regular basis. Codec support is hands down the best I have seen – virtually any audio or video can be played by this program, I have even used it to play dvd’s that expensive high-end dvd programs couldn’t open. VLC is also a champ when it comes to efficient cpu usage, this program can be ran on older machines (in most cases) without experiencing any problems.

VLC is cross-platform and available as a free download. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Tonido – Personal Content Server

tonidoTonido is a service that allows you to share music, pictures, files, calendars and a host of other services with your friends and family. Tonido also allows for you to remotley access your system from anywhere with a web connection. What makes this software unique is that all the sharing occurs from your home computer, you are not uploading files to flickr or dropbox – you stay in complete control.

When you first install Tonido, it will prompt you to create a profile. This profile will be the account that you use to access your desktop/laptop.

Once you have logged into the dashboard, you will find the following features.

Jukebox
Visualize a windows media player that is accessible from anywhere with your music.

Photos
You can share all of your photos with friends and family. You can even pick and choose who sees which pictures.

Search
If you need to view or retrieve a file off of your home computer the search feature is priceless. Tonido indexes your computer and this allows files to instantly come up during a search.

Thots
Basically a personal blog that is for your eyes only? The Thots app serves as a diary or a personal journal with the option to send individual thots to twitter.

Webshare
This is a very simple way to share files with other people. You can share to everyone, individuals, or to groups such as friends and family. This is far more efficient than email and you do not have to rely on a third party web service.

Workspace
Tasks, Calendar, Contacts, Notes and Files all in one place. You can use the Workspace to enter your appointments of the days, the tasks that need to be done and all the contacts you have. On the front, you will be able to see a quick summary of all the appointments for the day, to do list and so on. There is even a feed module that you can subscribe to so you won’t ever forget anything.

Remote Web Access
The remote access feature generates a unique url that points to your home computer. You can then go anywhere and from any internet enabled computer access the tonido service. Enabling remote access on my computer took less than 30 seconds, it was painless.

Tonido is open source and runs on all three platforms (windows, mac, and linux).
